The ecologist Thomas Berry wrote that we humans came into being as part of a long evolutionary process, and “[we] would not have survived if [we] had not had some basic role to fulfill within the larger Earth community.” But now perhaps we are failing in this role. The Global Footprint Network and the World Wildlife Fund report that at present humanity’s “ecological footprint” is 131% of our planet’s capacity to produce these resources.
